Rothko and Mondrian, the fore-fathers of colour blocking

Well since im new to this whole blogging malachy, i thought my first post should be about one of my favorite artists - Mark Rothko. Colour blocking is not a new trend, oh no it goes way back in history. Mark Rothko illustrates colour blocking perfectly in his paintings. His most famous paintings feature combinations of intense band of colours with a careful regard for composition, scale, balance and depth. Its a no brainer why his work continues to inspire designers around the world especially when colour blocking seems set on staying for a while. These street stylers are definitely walking rothko paintings.

Dutch Painter Piet Modian most famously known for his geometric primary coloured works of art, mostly due to the fact that YSL translated his work into one of the most iconic dresses in the history of fashion. The YSL "Mondrian" day dress was to spurn an era of Mondrian inspired fashion which raged all through the sixties. Master of Fashion Mr Yves Saint Lauren himself was a genius at bridging fashion and art.

The YSL "Mondrian" dress almost fifty years old is still inspiring today's designers, take these Christian Louboutin badboys for example. These platform sandals which can only be described as awesomeness definitely make the wearer stand out from the crowd. So take a leaf out of YSL and Louboutin's book, and get inspired by the greats Rothko and Mondrian.
